One of the ways in which the MAYSI-2 is implemented is by a state’s adoption of the tool for use throughout all of its juvenile justice facilities. Typically this occurs for specific agencies—for example, all of a state’s juvenile probation offices, or all of its juvenile pretrial detention centers, or all of its juvenile corrections assessment units.
The first statewide adoptions of the MAYSI-2 occurred around 2000, including the California Youth Authority (for its reception centers statewide) and the Juvenile Detention Center Association of Pennsylvania (for pretrial detention centers statewide). By 2010, 42 states had adopted the MAYSI-2 statewide for use in one or more of its juvenile justice agencies. One state (Colorado) adopted the MAYSI-2 for use in all child-serving juvenile justice and public child mental health programs in the state.
